Superpowers are nations, or groups of nations, that have a disproportionate degree of power compared with other nations. Their power is global in nature. Superpowers can be developed by a number of characteristics including economic wealth, military dominance, dominant culture and ideology as well as plentiful human and physical resources. Superpowers and emerging superpowers have a very significant impact on the global economy, global politics and the environment. Emerging economies and a growing middle class have led to an increase in consumption but superpowers differ in their willingness to act on environmental concerns.  This session will focus on the rise of China as a superpower and how they are starting to compete with the USA as the world’s leading power.
