Gemma scoops a top award for Maths

Reigate College student Gemma Heinrich awarded a Distinction in the British Mathematical Olympiad Round 1

Huge congratulations to Lower Sixth student Gemma Heinrich who was awarded a Distinction in the BMO1 (British Mathematical Olympiad Round 1), a follow-on round for the highest scorers in the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge. From this, the top 100 go on to a further round and possible Maths Olympiad selection. A ‘Distinction’ is the next highest award and achieved by only a small fraction of the entrants.

To achieve this award, Gemma has demonstrated an ability to understand and approach unusually hard problems and to explain and prove her solutions in clear mathematical language. From the BM01 guidance: “The questions are designed to be non-standard, requiring ingenuity in application of mathematical ideas and techniques”.

Gemma was previously at the Ashcombe School and is taking A Levels in Maths, Further Maths, History and Politics.
