Languages event attended by over 90 people

Last night’s Languages Event for students who will be starting this September, was attended by over 90 people.

Rosemary Osborne, Head of Modern Foreign Languages at Reigate College enthused, “We were thrilled to welcome four guest speakers to the event, who all work in careers involving languages:  Mark Zander who works in a global marketing role with Mars,  Flavio da Silva who worked at Motorola, Frances Gray a translator and interpreter and Laura Troop from the Wine Trade.  They all gave some excellent pointers to help students think about both future career possibilities and gap year or summer employment abroad.”

She continued, “Many students don’t make the connection at GCSE between studying a language and how it can help open up job and career opportunities later on.  Each of our speakers stressed the benefit of studying a language alongside degrees such as Business, Law or even subjects such as Engineering, since the market for employment then becomes much wider.”

“A number of students are using A Levels in French, Spanish and German, that we offer here at Reigate, to get onto degree courses in Chinese, which is currently ‘the’ language most in demand by many companies.”  She explained, “Success in A Level French, Spanish or German is proof of a student’s ability to learn a foreign language and many universities offer ‘from scratch’ degrees in Chinese and take students on this basis.”

Former Reigate College student, Sarah Canessa-Davies, who attended the event, added, “I’m currently doing Spanish and Chinese at Southampton University and having done A Levels in European languages obviously helps prepare you for a degree in Chinese.”

The College is offering German Masterclasses, to help with GCSE German exams on Monday 18th April and Monday 25th April from 4.30pm to 6.00pm.  Anyone who’s accepted an offer of a place at the College (on any course) to start this September is invited to attend. Email enquiries@reigate.ac.uk to book a place.
