Hello and welcome to Reigate College’s Music Department.
My name is Kate Swan and I’m the Head of Music.
I’m pleased you’ve chosen to study Music at Reigate College and I’m looking forward to welcoming you in person to our friendly team at the beginning of the academic year. We’re incredibly lucky to have such a well resourced Music Department, together with talented students and amazingly supportive staff and music alumni. Take a look at two of our recent collaborations: Times Like These; Don’t Go Out.
In preparation for you joining the course and to maintain your music skills, I’d like you to complete a series of activities over the coming months. I hope you enjoy working through them.
All of the tasks should be completed by Choices Day on 25 August.
The tasks will be released here in three phases:
Explore your Subject – 4 May
As you won’t be able to come into College for your Music audition this year, we would like you to work on your Audition Performance Video (see below) at home and then send it to us (together with a photograph/PDF of the sheet music you’ve used and a copy of your Grade 5 Theory Certificate) by 1 June.
Please make sure you label all the files you’re submitting, with your full name in the file titles – via the folder below.
An essential skill for Music A Level is the ability to perform accurately, musically and with confidence. Please submit a video of yourself performing a one minute excerpt of a piece that best demonstrates your performance skills on your first instrument along with a photograph/PDF of the sheet music.
You should include a spoken introduction where you introduce yourself by name and give the name of the piece you will play.
It is recommended that your Audition Performance Video is no higher than 720p (resolution).
You should complete this section of the tasks by 1 June.
Task 2: Theory Skills
The second task is to make sure you have all the underlying skills in order to be able to access the A Level Music course.
It’s expected that you have theory skills to Grade 5 theory level. In order to be able to demonstrate this to us in September please undertake the most relevant tasks below (A, B and/or C) to ensure you will be ‘up to speed’ when you start i.e. if you don’t have Grade 5 Theory then you will need to complete the whole of task C.
A. Submit a copy of your Grade 5 Theory Certificate to the link below by 1st June.
B. Use www.musictheory.net to ensure you are familiar with the topics in the following sections:
The Basics: All sections
Rhythm and Metre: All sections
Scales and Key Signatures: All sections
Intervals: All sections
The first two lessons from Chords, Diatonic Chords and the first from Chord Progressions would be a bonus.
We will be contacting all students in
July regarding the outcome of the auditions. For students who are successful
and will be enrolling onto the A Level Music course, you will need to complete
the following task by 25 August.
Your final task
before the start of the course is to compose an eight-bar theme for string
quartet in the style of Haydn. You should listen to the following excerpts from
Haydn’s String Quartet 76 no.5 for inspiration:
4.20 – 5.03
Please use noteflight, musescore or Sibelius and upload a pdf of your score to the link below before 25 August.
