Here’s our coaches round up of how our sports teams are doing so far this season.
Men’s Rugby
A great start to the season for the Men’s Rugby Team culminating in a close match and a great win against a good Godalming side on the 29 November. Ben Gibson has captained the team admirably, ably supported by Ruben Pilbeam. Special mentions to Jamie Compton, along with Dylan Amin, Harry Sturgess and Harrison Thompson. This team has huge potential and I look forward to supporting their development over the remainder of this season and into the next. Coach: Chris Edgley
Women’s Rugby
A fantastic, regular squad of 15 girls has been involved in competitive fixtures this season. Special mentions to the following girls who played key roles in games against Hove, Tiffin and Godalming:
- Bethan Richards
- Ciara Harvey
- Ella Critchlow
- Sasha Spain
The standard of Rugby has been a pleasure to watch, and the girls have gelled as a team, despite a background of playing for different clubs outside the College. All the team’s fixtures have been won, bar a narrow sevens defeat at the Hove festival. Coach: Iain Woodhams/Ben Puttick
Netball
The Netball teams have had a busy start to the season, with matches taking place every week bar two since the start of the year. Both the As and Bs have competed well in their respective leagues and bonded as a team.
The As represented the College at the Regionals Competition, where they competed against the top schools in the district. Their stand-out match was their win against Salesians as they were able to find their rhythm and dominate the game from early on.
Whilst the Bs may not have had a win yet this season, their game-play is continuously improving, with their team work developing week on week. The majority of games have been extremely tight, with it coming down to the last minute, or even at times the last goal to decide the match winner. The new year looks promising with all the progress they have made so far this season. Coach: Chloe Valbuena
Men’s 1st Team Football
The first team’s biggest success so far this season is progressing to the last 32 of the AOC National Cup while overcoming some difficult opposition along the way. In the League a few narrow defeats have left the team mid-table. However the team has shown it’s capable of competing with the best in the League. The team consists of players with exemplary attitudes, who represent the College extremely well. Coach: Rob Jones
Men’s 2nd Team Football
The second team started the season well with a 2-1 away win against Woking College’s first team in the League. Following a disappointing set back against Esher College away in the League and then conceding from the last kick of the game to lose against City College in the AoC cup, the team showed good character to bounce back and remain undefeated in their last 3 outings, drawing all three, including a hard fought 1-1 draw against current champions Godalming College. The team currently sits mid table in the League after four games. Stand out performances include Harry Langer in central defence; Sam Potten and Charlie Haines in midfield; and memorable goals from Sonny Theopanous, Xavier Richmond-Taylor, Zach Hussain, Charlie Sutherland and Callan Wood. Coach: Ben Chambers
Men’s 3rd Team Football
The third team has built a great squad over the last few months and has been unlucky not to have some more positive League results. In the League the thirds beat Woking, drew against Esher and lost to Gordon’s and Godalming. There have been some standout performances with the team coming from 3-1 down to draw with Esher with Sebastian Manzanera Preda scoring a late equaliser. Archie Cooper scored a hat-trick in a 3-1 friendly win against Freemen’s and Flyn McRobie made a string of great saves in a narrow loss to Godalming. Coach: Will Baker
Women’s Football
The Women’s Football team has scored an amazing 40 goals across seven games, with Jess Thomas scoring a number of hat-tricks. The most notable win of the season so far has been a 4-3 win over Woking College. The team came second in its group at the recent 7-a-side AoC Regionals competition and is currently unbeaten in the SSFL league which is an amazing achievement. Coach: Sophie Pout
Basketball
Great enthusiasm and motivation has been shown all term – with everyone stepping up to support and encourage their teammates. The team has so far achieved three wins in the SSFL, against Esher College, Salesians and St John Baptist. The team also competed in the South East Regional Tournament and came third in its group, beating Nescot and narrowly losing against two other teams. Coach: Penka Boutchelska
