I enjoyed studying at College and felt well supported by the Aspire programme. The Careers department and all the apprenticeship events were really useful in helping me think about my career pathway and employment decisions after College. These events and the conversations I had with my subject teachers helped me to realise that there is a plethora of avenues to explore after my time at College.

While I did go through the university application process and successfully received offers, I was not fully set on going. This made me look at other options and, with guidance from the Careers team, my eyes were opened to the world of degree apprenticeships. I researched and applied for numerous apprenticeships in the business sector, eventually discovering Corndel College, the Higher Education provider for UNICEF’s apprenticeships.

UNICEF is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) working to improve the lives of children here in the UK and all around the world. Initially, I was shortlisted for an Internal Communications Apprentice role, but was unsuccessful at the final round of interviews. However, they called me back and offered me the role of Advocacy Apprentice! They felt the position would really suit me and that I’d be a real asset to the charity: this was such a proud moment, as it felt like my hard work and determination to secure a degree apprenticeship that I really wanted had paid off.

During my very first week at UNICEF UK, not only did I work on an event in Parliament, I also met with the CEO and contributed to a domestic campaign called ‘Early Moments Matter’. These three key moments confirmed for me that the decision to join the charity was a truly great one for my career.

Day-to-day, I support project groups working on flagship campaigns; assist on campaign development research within both the domestic and international policy teams; and analyse campaigner engagement data.

The best piece of advice that I have to offer to anyone currently looking into their career path is to stay open minded and not restrict yourself! I’d never thought to look at roles or opportunities in the charitable sector however, since starting my role at UNICEF I’ve been exposed to so many opportunities and such great benefits to a career in the social sector. I’d also say look at the Careers Bulletin! Take full advantage of everything College has to offer as it’s so much easier to stay motivated when you use all the support that you have access to.
