Head of History & Classical Civilisation

Role: Head of History & Classical Civilisation

Duration: Permanent, full-time

Salary: up to £44,094 per annum

Closing date: Friday, 23rd March 2018

The College is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and hardworking teacher to lead a department that offers A Level History and Classical Civilisation and Level 2 Latin Language and Roman Civilisation. The post is available from 1st September 2018.

Our ideal person will be able to demonstrate a track record of success in delivering the highest standards and achieving outstanding results. The successful applicant will be skillful at motivating and encouraging colleagues to try out new approaches and resources.

The post would equally suit an experienced manager or a teacher seeking their first management role. Above all, we are seeking someone with an excellent knowledge of History and an interest in Classical Civilisation, along with the ability to make the subject come alive for our students. The post holder must be confident in the use of Information Technology in all aspects of their work.

The Department offers two History courses – one with a modern and one with an early modern focus. They both follow the AQA specification. The Department organises a number of day trips, for example, to Hampton Court and the National Archives. The Department also invites visiting lecturers to talk on units studied. At the end of the Lower Sixth, students have the opportunity of a 5 day educational visit to Paris or Berlin to support their studies.

The Department also offers Classical Civilisation, which has its own Course Leader. Students have the opportunity to take part in a variety of study days and an annual trip to either Greece or Italy.

Level 2 Latin Language and Roman Civilisation is an enrichment course aimed at beginners introducing the students to the Latin Language through the Cambridge Latin Course.

The Department works closely as a team in a friendly and co-operative manner. Strong emphasis is given to mutual support by the exchange of ideas and materials and thus the co-operative construction of Schemes of Work and Lesson Plans.

The salary for this post is up to £44,094 per annum, including PSP & Reigate College Allowance.

Candidates are asked to complete and return the enclosed application form to the Personnel Department by post or by email to jobs@reigate.ac.uk as soon as possible, but no later than 9.00am on Friday 23 March 2018. Interviews will take place on Wednesday 28th March 2018.

In completing their supporting statement, candidates are asked to indicate the particular strengths and experiences they would bring to the post and the areas of College life, outside their teaching, to which they may be prepared to contribute. Candidates should include key results data including ALPS scores, value added, high grades (A*-B), retention and pass rates.
