On Friday 13th March, Reigate College was delighted to welcome author, public speaker and activist Shaun Attwood to tell almost 200 students the hard-hitting story of his time in ‘America’s deadliest jail’.
The British former stockbroker turned mass producer of ecstasy made his fortune in America and served time in Arizona for his crimes. Through disturbing true life stories of murder, violence and the reality of prison hierarchy/gangs, he shared his personal first-hand experiences with students and spoke of a system where human rights violations were overlooked by the pursuit of profit over people. Attwood also explored some of the problems with the Western criminal justice systems, all the while dispelling any myths of prison life being easy.
The talk was incredibly well received by students of Sociology, Criminology, Law and Psychology, who engaged in the audience participation and asked some great questions.
