7 students receive Carbon Literacy Award

Congratulations to the 7 Reigate College students who’ve joined the group of 80,000 people who are now certified as carbon literate!

The Carbon Literacy Award is run as part of the College’s Enrichment Programme and forms part of its larger College commitment to sustainability.

Students meet weekly for 7-8 weeks to complete 5 interactive modules and finish the award by creating action pledges to help reduce their carbon footprint. The course covers: The science behind climate change; Social equity & climate change; What you can do to act on climate change; Strategies and skills for communicating action on climate change.

Laura MacIntyre (Associate Principal) who runs the Award said, ‘Our aim is to increase awareness of climate change and the positive actions we can take as individuals and a College community.’

‘Climate change is widely recognised as one of the greatest and most urgent challenges facing the world, recognised locally, nationally and globally. Becoming Carbon Literate means understanding the science behind climate change, carbonimpacts, climate justice and how Governments, industry, international agencies, communities and individuals can act to reduce carbon emissions and tackle climate change.’

The Carbon Literacy Award is a short course written by Manchester Metropolitan University and accredited by The Carbon Literacy Project. It aims to increase knowledge and understanding of the carbon costs and impacts of everyday activities and the ability and motivation to reduce emissions, on an individual, community and organisational basis.
