Hello and welcome to Reigate College’s Music Department.

My name is John Evans and I’m the Course Leader for Music (Performance), BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate.

I’m pleased you’ve chosen to study Music at Reigate College and I’m looking forward to welcoming you in person to our friendly team at the beginning of the academic year. We’re incredibly lucky to have such a well resourced Music Department, together with talented students and amazingly supportive staff and music alumni.

In order to study Music (Performance), BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate at Reigate College you must successfully pass the College’s audition process.

Task 1: Performance Video

An essential skill for Music (Performance) is the ability to perform popular music from the 1950’s onwards accurately, musically and with confidence in front of an audience.

Please video yourself performing a one minute excerpt of a piece of popular music that best demonstrates your performance skills on your first instrument (including voice).

You should include a spoken introduction where you introduce yourself by name and give the name of the piece you will play.

It is recommended that your videos are no higher than 720p (resolution).

It is important that we see both you and your instrument fully in the video – please do ask for help from a parent or guardian if necessary.

Task 2: Biography

Your second task is to write a biography in Word (approximately one A4 page).

The Biography should make reference to your musical skills and experiences and how you see your life as a musician developing once you start at Reigate College (and beyond if you see Music as a future career path).

Please submit your Biography at the same time as your Performance Video – via the folder link above – and label all files with your name in the title.

Please include each of the following in your biography:

  • Full name
  • Age
  • How long you have been playing instrument / instruments?
  • What made you want to study Music?
  • What are you inspirations / influences?
  • What musical experiences do you have? Performing live, recording, playing with a band as a solo artist or composer?
  • How do you see your life as a musician developing once you start at Reigate and beyond?
  • What do you want to take away from the BTEC Music (Performance) course?

Get Going

For your ‘Get Going’ BTEC Music task I would like you to choose a song by The Beatles and produce a ‘creative cover’ or a ‘version’ of it, in a completely different style to the original.

You may need to research some different styles in order to complete this task.

Possible genres could include Jazz, Blues, R&B, Soul, Funk, Rock n Roll, Punk, Grunge, Rock, Country, Rap/ Hip Hop or Reggae –  to name but a few!

Record a performance of your cover version and submit it via the link below.  Please remember to use your full name as the file name.

Aim High

You are to research the styles of music and the key features of that style. Compare the two pieces using MADTSHIRT (Melody, Articulation, Dynamics, Texture, Structure, Harmony/Chords, Instruments, Rhythm, Tonality).
