Hello and welcome to Reigate College’s Music Department.

My name is Lucy Kilner and I’m the teacher for Music (Performance), BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate.

I’m pleased you’ve chosen to study Music at Reigate College and I’m looking forward to welcoming you in person to our friendly team at the beginning of the academic year. We’re incredibly lucky to have such a well resourced Music Department, together with talented students and amazingly supportive staff and music alumni.

In order to study Music (Performance), BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate at Reigate College you must successfully pass the College’s audition process.

If you would like to study Music (Performance), BTEC Level 3 but have not yet organised an audition, please contact admissions@reigate.ac.uk.

PLEASE READ THE TASK INFORMATION AND SUBMIT YOUR FILES USING THE ‘BTEC MUSIC’ LINK BELOW.

Remember to add your full name to EVERY task file you upload.

BTEC Music

Please email Head of Music john.evans@reigate.ac.uk if you have any queries.

Task: Performance Video

An essential skill for Music (Performance) is the ability to perform popular music from the 1950’s onwards accurately, musically and with confidence in front of an audience.

Please video yourself performing a one minute excerpt of a piece of popular music that best demonstrates your performance skills on your first instrument (including voice).

The performance must be a different song/piece from the one you submitted for your course audition.

You should include a spoken introduction where you introduce yourself by name and give the name of the piece you will play.

It is recommended that your video is no higher than 720p (resolution).

It is important that we see both you and your instrument fully in the video – please do ask for help from a parent or guardian if necessary.

Task: Improve your music theory knowledge

Having a secure knowledge of the fundamentals of music theory will help you enormously on the BTEC course as well as improving you as a musician.

Read and make notes from the ABRSM – My Music Theory website on the following chapters:

  • Simple time signatures
  • Pitch and the treble clef
  • The bass clef
  • The grand staff
  • Accidentals
  • Time name of notes
  • Time names of rests
  • Dotted notes

Screenshot / scan / photograph your notes and upload to the same link (below) as your videoed performance. Make sure you include your name in the filename.

BTEC Music

Once you have read through the chapters, complete the following quiz:

What Grade am I? – My Music Theory

Screenshot your score, name the file to include your name and upload to the same folder as you have your notes.

Aim High

You are to select one of the songs from the list below, compare and contrast the two styles of music. The links have been provided for you.

You are to research the styles of music and the key features of that style. Compare the two pieces using MADTSHIRT (Melody, Articulation, Dynamics, Texture, Structure, Harmony/Chords, Instruments, Rhythm, Tonality).

Prepare a presentation using PowerPoint that you will then present to the rest of the class when you start on the course.
