¡Hola!

My name is Carmen Cobo-Ortiz and I’m the course leader for Spanish A Level. I’m delighted you’ve chosen to study Spanish and I’m looking forward to welcoming you to our friendly Modern Languages Department at the beginning of the academic year.

In preparation for you starting the course and to help maintain your language skills, I’m going to be setting a series of tasks for you to complete over the coming months. I hope you enjoy working through them.

The tasks are organised in three distinct steps and should all be completed by Choices Day on 25 August 2026. This is to give you the best insight into what the courses will be like and/or help prepare you for them.

Please note, some Course Leaders (for example for Music) may release their tasks earlier, as they may form part of the College’s audition process. If this applies to you, you’ll be notified separately.

The Benefits of Learning a Language

Languages are useful for holidays and travel, but did you know that learning a language can also:

  • Improve employment opportunities – your linguistic and cultural knowledge will be invaluable to employers.
  • Improve mental health – by alleviating stress and depression and delaying the onset of dementia.
  • Improve brain power – making you a better lateral thinker. Often good linguists are also good mathematicians and musicians (though you don’t have to be a mathematician or musician to be a linguist!)

Watch this video and make notes on the benefits of learning a foreign language:

Developing Your Skills

At this stage, you’re probably more concerned about how a language can help you with further studies and your future career. Did you know that by learning a language, you will not only gain language-specific skills such as translating and interpreting, summarising, essay writing and understanding of grammar, but also develop transferable skills useful for any career such as:

  • confidence and flexibility
  • teamwork
  • interpersonal and communication
  • presentation
  • debating and discussion.

Compare how these people have used languages in their careers:

David Richardson – Science

Peter Clark – Football Translation https://www.routesintolanguages.ac.uk/sites/routesintolanguages.ac.uk/files/peter_clark_-_football_translation.pdf

Beverly Costa – Psychotherapy https://www.routesintolanguages.ac.uk/sites/routesintolanguages.ac.uk/files/beverly_costa.pdf

Spanish Culture

You will learn far more than just language on a language course – you will build your cultural knowledge about the countries where the language is spoken, developing an insight into their history, culture, values and beliefs.

La Tomatina

Read the following information about the famous tomato battle that takes place in Spain each year.

  • Write a short summary in English about the festival.
  • Make a note of any Spanish words you are unfamiliar with and look up their meaning.
  • If you were giving a presentation about this fiesta, how would you best organise the information boxes?

Develop your understanding by researching an element of Spanish culture that interests you.

For example if you would like to know more about Spanish fiestas, visit the following website: https://www.red2000.com/spain/1f-map.html (You can check your understanding by simply changing the website into the English version).

Try this fun Kahoot quiz to test your general knowledge of the Hispanic world.

Get Going

One of the best ways to prepare for your A Level Spanish course is to revise, so you are really confident with what you have already learnt.  Remember the best way to learn a language is to practise little and often, so you are constantly reinforcing your learning.  You can do this in lots of enjoyable ways.

Work through the following activities:

1. Revise vocabulary

Revise your vocabulary from GCSE in a fun way with Quizlets. Try out all the activities: speller, learn, test, as well as the games scatter and gravity, for practising the following essential words and phrases:

  • Daily routine:  http://quizlet.com/12410384/daily-routine-flash-cards/
  • Work and leisure:  http://quizlet.com/12410404/work-and-leisure-flash-cards/
  • Emotions  (which all use the verb estar because they are ‘temporary’): http://quizlet.com/12410423/emotions-and-feelings-flash-cards/
  • Characteristics (which all use the verb ser because they are ‘permanent’): http://quizlet.com/12410438/characteristics-flash-cards/

2. Study Spanish grammar

Thoroughly revise your knowledge of Spanish grammar to ensure you are confident and proficient with the basics.

Use the following website for lots of different options: try the placement test,  look at Spanish lessons 201, but also dip into Spanish lessons 101 if you want to review the basics of tenses, adjectives and pronouns.

https://www.123teachme.com/learn_spanish/beginner/

Review the tenses and make sure you are confident conjugating verbs in the following tenses:

  • Present – regular verbs
  • Present 2 – regular and irregular (spelling change verbs)
  • Present continuous
  • Preterite
  • Imperfect
  • Present perfect
  • Future
  • Conditional

Use the following website to help you:

https://languagesonline.org.uk/Hotpotatoes/spanishindex.html#Grammar

3. Practise reading and listening skills

Use these websites to practice listening and reading in Spanish:

https://www.spanishlistening.org/  Great for listening, includes exercises.

Coffee break Spanish season 1 (Beginner)

Coffee break Spanish season 2 (Intermediate)

Coffee break Spanish season 3 (Upper Intermediate)

https://www.audiria.com/index.php Choose chapters and select levels 0 and  1 to begin with.

https://lingua.com/spanish/reading/ Reading texts with exercises

https://www.learnpracticalspanishonline.com/beginner/beginner-readings.html Also includes some audio.

Mi vida loca –  a mystery in 21 short episodes which gives you lots of listening practice.

4. Listen to Spanish Music

Enjoy some Spanish songs while practising the language:

http://lyricstraining.com/es/

Choose your favourite Spanish artist and try and fill the gaps as they sing!

Tip:  Start with beginner level.

5. Watch Spanish TV and films

If you have a television streaming service at home such as Netflix or Amazon Prime, explore Spanish films and television series, or try watching your favourite film with the Spanish subtitles.

Previous students have recommended the following:

  • La casa de papel
  • Las chicas del cable
  • El ministerio del tiempo
  • 45 revoluciones
  • Elite

Aim High

For the next series of tasks, I’d like you to test yourself on five key areas: grammar, listening, reading, writing and translation.  Try to do these on your own, without using a dictionary or online help.  Bring your answers to the first lesson and we’ll go through the questions together.
