Lower Sixth Year
From the beginning of the Lower Sixth students benefit from a variety of Careers support:
Autumn Term
- Students choose their Lower Sixth Career Pathway during enrolment (with the opportunity to change it later in the Autumn Term).
- The new Lower Sixth is introduced to the Careers Department and Unifrog (destinations platform) during tutorial time.
- Parents of new students are invited to an online Welcome to Careers webinar
- Work experience drop-in sessions start, to help support students find work experience (a requirement for all students in their Lower Sixth year).
Spring Term
- Get Ahead Day in March gives all Lower Sixth Students the opportunity to attend a careers fair and talks about going to university or taking other routes. They also have a one-to-one interview with their Tutor about their career plans and work experience ideas.
- Around the same time, a Beyond Reigate Information Evening is run online for parents and guardians.
- Lower Sixth pathway classes start, including the Oxbridge pathway (for students considering applying to Oxford or Cambridge)
- Programme of talks and events starts, for students considering Medicine, Veterinary Science or Dentistry (MVD), and the College’s Work Experience team starts work on helping these students find appropriate placements.
Summer Term
- Progression Day gives students the help they need to plan their next steps, including writing a personal statement or building their CV.
- Students select their Upper Sixth tutorial pathway – either University or App & Emp (Apprenticeships and Employment.
- Students apply to join an Upper Sixth Career Pathway.
- A Meet the Employer event is held at College, attended by 25-30 companies/organisations
Upper Sixth Year
This support continues until students break to sit their exams towards the end of May:
Autumn Term
- Students will have joined either the University or App & Emp tutorial pathway to support them with their progression plans and many will have opted for an additional hour of specific Careers Pathway support, to help with their applications.
- Parents of students applying to universities via UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) are invited to an online Applying to University
- An Apprenticeship Pathway launch event is held for students and their parents who are considering applying for apprenticeships.
- Personal statement feedback sessions and UCAS drop-in sessions are run in the Careers Department for those needing additional support with their UCAS application.
Spring Term
- Students who have applied for university via UCAS are advised on how to reply to any offers they receive and what to do on results day.
- Students interested in applying for apprenticeships are encouraged to attend one or more talks during National Apprenticeship Week.
Ongoing
- A Careers Bulletin is emailed to all students every week (term time).
- Students can book a one-to-one Careers Guidance Interview with Careers staff.
- Students who need help arranging work experience can drop into the Careers department any day (term time) for support.
- Subject staff make students aware of any opportunities for further study, apprenticeships or employment relating to their subjects.
- Tutors support students in making decisions about their progression choices.
- Students with EHCPs or from other disadvantaged groups receive tailored support such as additional Careers interviews or help with finding work experience and interview preparation workshops.
