Classics students hold ancient Rome in their hands

Our Classics students immersed themselves in Roman culture on Tuesday (16 April), handling ancient coins and tokens at a fascinating talk given by Dr Clare Rowan, Associate Professor at the University of Warwick.

Classics teacher Lauren Cox, said, “It was a real treat to share in Clare’s passion for Roman coins and to have the opportunity to hold these precious remnants from our ancient past. The session was delivered with real verve which developed our students’ understanding of the wider debates surrounding Classics and provided them with a real taste of a university environment. We are very grateful for her time and the support shown by Warwick University.”

Clare is currently working as part of a European Union Research Council funded project to do a comprehensive analysis of the role played by tokens in the ancient Mediterranean.  It’s hoped the work will build a fuller picture of tokens and their role in the ancient world and its cultural legacy.
