Community Dance Leadership students inspire local schoolchildren

College students on the Community Dance Leadership programme yesterday completed a three-week festival in which they used dance to teach schoolchildren about their curriculum topic of the Great Fire of London.

During the three weeks, the students led a session each week at Holmesdale Community Infant School, exploring different aspects of the Great Fire and using their own choreography. Special mention goes to Ellie Newman who took charge in the final session, teaching the children a special Royal Family Dance to add to what they had already learned.

Head of Dance Claire Taylor said of the festival, “Dance Leadership at Reigate College continues to go from strength to strength and is invaluable in teaching our local community about dance. During the festival we performed for 60 schoolchildren, producing a piece that proved so successful we have been asked back next year to perform and teach again.”

The Dance Leadership students involved in the project were: Ellie Newman, Isabella Williamson, Grzegorz Todryk, Libby Canagasebey, Rianna Mott Stevens, Heather Beaumont, Odette Slape, Naomi Walker, Dimple Malhi and Dorota Tanska.  A special thank you goes to Lower Sixth BTEC Level 3 Performing Arts (Dance) students who performed the Dance Leaders’ choreography.

The Community Dance Leadership programme is one of a number of extra-curricular qualifications offered at Reigate College.
