The Music (Performance), BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate course is suitable for all instrumentalists or vocalists who have some proficiency and a passion to develop as a performer. The course broadens experience and skills in ensemble performance and students will be required to perform in public on a regular basis throughout the course. Students will perform a variety of genres covering popular music from the 1950s to the modern day. The course also includes training in listening, critical review and composition.

Confidence in some form of musical literacy skills is essential and we recommend that students are comfortable with Music Theory to ABRSM Grade 3 before embarking on the course. Students who have not achieved Grade 5 Theory will be required to attend extra sessions to support their studies. Students should be creative and willing to be involved with the musical activities of the Department.

Take a look at some students’ recent performances in the Performing Arts Photo Gallery and Video Gallery.

This course will combine with almost any other subject. In the past students have also studied:

  • Music Technology
  • English
  • Psychology
  • History

Course Specific Trips, Visits & Experiences

BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate in Music (Performance) students have the opportunity to take part in a variety of course related experiences. In the last couple of years, these have included:

  • A chance to perform in events such as the College’s Winter and Spring Concerts
  • The opportunity to take part in Reigate’s ‘New Music Nights’ – both behind the scenes and on the stage. These take place on the first Friday of every month at different venues around Reigate (e.g. Reigate Football and Cricket Clubs) and feed into Reigate Summer Festival (see below)
  • The opportunity to perform as part of a College showcase event, on the main Tunnel Stage, at Reigate Summer Festival, a weekend-long arts festival in Reigate’s town centre in June
  • Recording sessions at professional recording studios
  • College Charity Events and parties (such as lunchtime fundraisers, community days and Freshers’ party)
  • Song-writing workshops (e.g. with Guy Chambers), where students have the opportunity to showcase their work
  • Music videos such as Times Like These and Don’t Go Out

All BTEC Music students are required to attend either the Pop Choir, Chamber Choir or Function Band for the duration of their studies. In addition to the musical activity requirements of the course, students also have the opportunity to get involved in the College’s Activities Programme.

All students need to gain an experience of the work place during their time at College and for students studying vocational courses it should ideally be linked to one of their subject areas.

The Music (Performance), BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate course is assessed via external assessment and coursework: portfolios, journals, audio and video evidence, presentations, accounts and evaluations.

The exam board for this BTEC is Pearson BTEC.

All students need to have at least five GCSEs at Grade 4 or above (and a satisfactory school reference) in order to be accepted on an A Level/BTEC Level 3 programme. Acceptance on the course is subject to audition and interview with the Music staff.  This will be an opportunity for students to present some of their performances and learn about how the course will develop their potential. Ideally students should also have passed an ABRSM Grade 3 (instrument) qualification and should also be able to demonstrate an understanding of Music Theory to ABRSM Grade 3.

Students will do well on the course if they are:

  • Creative
  • Confident
  • Natural performers – perhaps already in a band
  • Fascinated by the workings of the music world in general
  • Self-motivated
  • Team players
  • Keen to develop their instrumental or vocal skills to a high level and able to read sheet music

Students should be enthusiastic performers, creative improvisers, active listeners, possess good personal organisation skills and have high levels of commitment.

Why should I take this course?

If you love performing this is a great course for you. You’ll also learn about the music industry, develop your practical theory knowledge, perform in ensembles as well as a soloist and develop the skills to prepare you for further music study and/or a career in the music industry.

Is there an audition process?

Yes, the audition process exists to ensure you have the necessary performance skills and a basic understanding of music theory.

What will my audition involve?

You will be asked to perform as a soloist and prepare cover versions of songs in different styles. You will also complete a theory test to Grade 3 ABRSM standard and discuss your musical experiences, explaining why you want to study music at Reigate College.

What careers are available to music students?

The requirements of the qualification mean that you will develop the transferable and higher-order skills that are highly regarded by higher education providers and employers. For example, ensemble music performance will give you the confidence to perform, express and showcase your skills. There are also many employment opportunities for successful ensemble practitioners in the areas of live performance, session music, musical theatre, community music and commercial bands. The qualification carries UCAS points and is recognised and accepted by universities.

What could I do next?

The possibilities are endless. Music will enable you to demonstrate many skills which employers, colleges and universities will be looking for. It can also give you opportunities to travel, meet people and get the most out of life. The UK music industry helps to drive economic growth by creating jobs and opportunities for young people. The 2015 UK music survey Measuring Music identified that the music industry supported more than 117,000 full-time jobs in the UK, of which 69,300 were professional musicians. The music industry contributed £4.1 billion to the UK economy, outpacing the overall growth of the economy by 2.5 per cent. In 2016, live music alone created £3.7 billion in direct and indirect income for the UK.
