Past College student Oskar Scarsbrook charted his journey into sports journalism with Lower and Upper Sixth English students yesterday (31 January). Now Communications Director at Circuit Sport, Oskar explained routes into journalism; actions students can take right now to gain vital experience; and how staying curious about everyone and anyone is key.
Oskar said, “In the nine years since leaving College, I’ve turned a hobby into my work and travel the world doing it. Sure, I’ve had my share of setbacks and difficulties, but with hard work, persistence, and a passion for your areas of interest, you can find a way to establish your writing career.”
Richard Vardy, Head of English, said, “Hearing from Oskar about staying focused, finding a gap in the market and practising your craft was so useful. Studying A Level English develops important skills for a career in journalism and social media, and now more than ever there are opportunities to blog, vlog and create content to build writing experience from a young age.
“A huge thanks to Oskar for combatting the jet lag from his latest travels and delivering such an uplifting talk!”
