Trip gives students a taste of life on the trading floor

Now in its third year, June’s Financial Trading trip to the University of Reading continues to grow in scale and ambition, with 47 students taking part.

Organised by the College’s Economics team, it’s a chance to experience the pressure and excitement of a real-time trading floor, using the university’s cutting-edge simulation facilities.

While closely linked to the A Level Economics curriculum, the trip was also open to students who attend the College’s Student Trading and Investment Club.

Oliver Wright, Head of Economics, commented: “It was brilliant to see our students engaging so enthusiastically with the simulations. Whether they study Economics or not, they all showed genuine curiosity and a willingness to challenge themselves.

“It’s a rare opportunity to apply strategic thinking and problem-solving in a fast-paced environment, and they rose to it brilliantly.”

While the morning focused on trading shares, the afternoon session introduced students to the world of foreign exchange (FOREX) trading.

Our share-trading winners were Elliot Spiers and Barney Stewart, with a virtual profit of over £13.5m, while Aaron Connor and Max Mills took top spot in the FOREX session, bagging a virtual profit of more than £9.95m.

Special thanks to the University of Reading staff team, the College Trips Department and Economics teachers Athena Boutoura, Mark Batsford and William Devonport for helping to deliver such a successful, inspiring day.
