Bananas split opinion on inclusive communication

Things got a bit bananas at a lunchtime talk about inclusive communication for 26 students on the College’s MVD (Medics, Vets and Dentistry) Pathway. Dr Alix Lewer, founder of Include.org and Sarah, an Include.org member with lived experience delivered a lively practical session that saw students try out signing “My name is…” in Makaton.

Once the introductions were over, students paired off and completed a drawing challenge where the describer of a scene relied solely on facial expressions, gestures and body language to communicate what needed to be drawn by their partner.

Finally, the Banana Challenge caused great debate as the group were asked to rank different depictions of a banana from ‘Easiest’ to ‘Hardest’ to understand in a line-up.

While our students had great fun with their challenges, Dr Lewer explained how around 20% of the UK population have a communication difficulty, just how varied these needs can be, and the difference that making a concerted effort to engage really can make.

Liz Sanders, MVD Pathway Lead, said “This session really helped our students have a better appreciation of the importance of inclusive communication and develop the practical skills and mindset needed to play their part in their future careers.”
