On Saturday 3rd March, the Shadow G (Reigate College) Fight Team travelled to the Crawley K2 Arena to attend the CCMA National Sanda Championships & GB Team Selection.
Sanda, also known as Sanshou, Chinese boxing or Chinese kickboxing, is a Chinese self-defence system and combat sport.
Also attending the Championships were a number of clubs with seasoned fighters who have been competing and training for as long as six years, so with a combined training experience of just a year, the Reigate College students – Francis Papworth Burrell, Joshua Hefley, Ethan Elsdon and Jevon Clark – were very much the underdogs.
However, all four rose to the occasion and performed way beyond expectations to produce some very exciting fights. When the final bell sounded, the results were as follows:
- Francis Papworth Burrell: silver
- Joshua Hefley: silver
- Ethan Elsdon: bronze
- Jevon Clark: bronze
Following their impressive performance, all four have been invited to attend the GB Sanshou Team Training, giving them the chance to work towards representing their country as Sanshou athletes. This is a fantastic achievement and our congratulations go to all four and our thanks to their coach, James Gottshalk.
