Philosophy, Religion & Ethics students attended a fascinating talk given by Dr Joachim Aufderheide, Professor of Philosophy at King’s College London (KCL), which explored the question: ‘Do animals have a moral status?’
Dr Aufderheide focused on the position presented by 18th century philosopher Immanuel Kant, who claimed that animals have no moral status, because they are not rational beings. Dr Aufderheide challenged this perspective, arguing that animals, just like humans, have practical needs and wants. Hence, animals also deserve the right to not be killed for food or clothing.
Students heard about Dr Aufderheide’s research work, the structure of the Philosophy degree at KCL, and careers relating to Philosophy and Religion. It is hoped that the links established with KCL will provide further opportunities for students interested in pursuing Philosophy or Theology at degree level.
