Thank you to Adelaide Hitchings, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) expert, for delivering an informative talk and workshop for 32 Geography students on February 11. Students were tasked with using traditional methods to plot data onto maps to work out the boundaries and square meterage of land designated as a solar power farm. They then witnessed how modern GIS technology does this so much faster and with more accuracy.
Adelaide talked through her career path from Geography degree to her current role as GIS Lead at land and property consultancy, Gateley Hamer. She also gave tips on how to gain experience in the discipline and explained how GIS used in the engineering and surveying industry, including its role in renewable energy and regeneration schemes.
Geography teacher James Neal said, “Using GIS is a key skill for Geography students and can be used in their coursework to help answer a question they have posed. We’re very grateful to Adelaide for giving us such a practical perspective on how GIS is used in everyday business.”
