Global Recycling Day 2019

Jonathan Essex and Lucy Acheson

The College was delighted to welcome local councillor Jonathan Essex from the Green Party into College on Monday 18th March to raise awareness of Global Recycling Day.

SU Environment Officer Lucy Acheson introduced the proceedings by summarising the ways in which the College is becoming more environmentally friendly, before handing over to Jonathan for his lunchtime talk. He gave a challenging and thought-provoking account of global environmental issues, explaining that recycling is only part of the solution – as consumers, we need to reduce the amounts we use in the first place, and think about what we can reuse, as well as recycling.

Following his talk and suggestions for how to increase local recycling, there was the opportunity to ask questions, and these ranged from issues surrounding the climate change protests by schoolchildren to the success of the plastic bag campaign.

Our thanks to Jonathan for his time and also to the Students’ Union for organising the event.
