Opening up new routes into architecture

Lauren Day apprenticeship talk

Architecture apprentice and alumna Lauren Day delivered a talk today (22 February) to the College’s 3D Design students on routes into the profession, the pros and cons of apprenticeships, and what makes a great portfolio.

Lauren explained how finding an architectural practice to take you on as an apprentice is the first step – only once this is secured can you apply to university. She recalled, “Two years ago, there was very little information about which architectural practices offered apprenticeships. I sent my CV, covering letters and portfolio to over 100 practices and received just five replies. People are busy, some don’t know much about the scheme and so you must be resilient!”

Having never had an apprentice before, local firm Reigate Architects did invite her in and were so impressed with her pitch, they offered her four weeks’ work experience which then led to them making her an offer.

While the Master’s level RIBA Part 2 professional qualification is an established apprenticeship route, currently just two universities provide undergraduate apprenticeships to complete Part 1: Portsmouth and London South Bank, although it’s hoped more will follow suit soon.

Head of 3D Design and Engineering Rebecca Degiorgio said, “Huge thanks to Lauren for giving such an honest, informative talk to our students.”

Lauren is studying for a BA (Hons) Architectural Assistant degree (Level 6) at London South Bank University while working towards her RIBA Part 1 qualification. In December, Lauren was awarded Apprentice of the Year at the Reigate and Banstead Business Awards.
