Other Sources of Help

Examination periods provide a great opportunity to shine, but for some students this period can be an extremely stressful one.

Staff in the Learning Support Hub are available to help you cope with revision, exam stress or any other problems relating to exams and study.

Revision Packs with an 8 week revision timetable and hints, tips and guidelines to exam success are available from room P103.

The Learning Support team operates a drop-in centre in P103 every day between 9.00 am and 4.00 pm. For more information visit the Student Support page.

A Wellbeing and Mental Health SharePoint site is accessible by all students and staff from the intranet. On this SharePoint site students have access to a large number of resources aimed at supporting them through their time at Reigate College. The SharePoint site contains many resources specifically designed to help students cope with exam stress and anxiety.

What is an exam clash?

An exam clash is when a student has two or more exams scheduled for the same time on the same day. If a candidate is taking two or more exams timetabled in the same session and the combined time is more than three hours, the Exams Officer can move one of the exams to a different session within the same day.

Supervision rooms

If a student has a clash, then after their first exam they will be taken to a supervision room by an invigilator. They will need to have brought lunch and will not be able to look at their mobile phone, only paper notes and text books.

Overnight Supervision

If the total duration of three or more examinations to be taken in one day is more than 5 hours 30 minutes for GCSE examinations or more than 6 hours for GCE examinations (AS, A2, A-level), centres may wish to arrange overnight supervision. However, the candidate should be offered the opportunity to sit all the examinations on the scheduled day.

Overnight Supervision Form

This form will need to be signed by the candidate, and the parent who will be supervising the student. The Exams Office will liaise with the parent to arrange the logistics of the student being collected from the College and returned the next morning.

Illness

Call the College Reception and report the absence. If a student wants to request special consideration for the absence, a note from a medical practitioner confirming the illness will be needed.

Lateness

Students can be admitted into an exam up to one hour after the official start time and should go directly to the venue. Students will be given the full time for the exam. If students arrive after the first hour they will need to go straight to the Exams Office.

Bag drop rooms

These will be advised to students by their subject teacher. Remember that any electronic devices, watches and notes must be left in your bag. Clash students will be advised which bag drop room to use in the clash email the student will receive from the Exams Office.

Special consideration requests

These are requested for a candidate who has temporarily experienced illness, injury or some other event outside of their control at the time of the assessment. It is applied when the issue or event has had, or is reasonably likely to have had, a material effect on a candidate’s ability to take an assessment or demonstrate his or her normal level of attainment in an assessment.

Find out more about eligibility and examples within the JCQ guide to the special consideration process.

Confirmation

The College will confirm to the candidate that special consideration has been submitted to the Exam Board. It should be noted that we do not have any influence over the decision as to whether special consideration is applied, as this lies with the Exam Boards, and we do not find out what percentage has been applied. If you were absent from an exam, the Exam Board will calculate an aegrotat (estimated grade) for the missing paper(s) which will be processed for results day.

A Level (and A Level equivalent) results will be emailed to students via their College email accounts and uploaded to the portal from 9.00am on Thursday 15 August 2024.

GCSE results will be emailed to students via their College email accounts and uploaded to the portal from 9.00am on Thursday 22 August 2024.

The College reception will be open between 9.00am – 12.00 noon for any student who does not have access to the internet to come to.

Students should download and save a copy of these results to a personal account, as Reigate College accounts will be disabled at the end of August.

Exams Office opening hours on Results Days:

The Exams Office will be open 9am- 4pm on Thursday 15 August and Thursday 22 August. On subsequent days the Exams Office will be open 9am-1pm. There will be Senior members of staff on duty on both days.

Further guidance on next steps after results day can be found on the Moving On page

Clerical Check

This is a re-check of all clerical procedures leading to the issue of a result. This service will include the following checks: 1) that all parts of the script have been marked, 2) the totalling of marks and 3) the recording of marks.

Review of Marking

This is a post-results review of the original marking to ensure that the agreed mark scheme has been applied correctly. Reviewers will not re-mark the script. They will only act to correct any errors identified in the original marking. This service will include:

  • the clerical re-checks detailed in R1 (see Post-Results Services forms linked above)
  • a review of marking as described above.

If you do not have a university place pending, you have two options.

Firstly, you may request a ‘Non’ Priority Review of Marking’. To do this you will need to fill out the ‘Post-Results Services form’ and make the appropriate payment on-line (see link to forms above). Email or hand the completed form to the Exams office or College reception by the date stated. The cost and deadline for this service is printed on the form. Late applications cannot be submitted.

Secondly, you may also request ‘Non-Priority Review of Marking and Access to Script’. Email or hand the completed form to the Exams office or College reception by the date stated. The cost and deadline for this service is printed on the form. Late applications cannot be submitted.

You must be aware that by requesting a review of marking, your marks and/or grade could go down, up or remain. A very high percentage do not change at all.

Priority Review of Marking

If you have a university place pending, you may request a ‘Priority Review of Marking’. To do this you will need to fill out the ‘Post-Results Services form’ and make the appropriate payment on-line (see links to forms above). Email or hand the completed form to the Exams office or College reception by the date stated. The cost and deadline for this service is printed on the form. Late applications cannot be submitted.

Appeals

Appeals have to be submitted in accordance with JCQ regulations. Appeals are in two stages:

  • Stage One – Preliminary Review
  • Stage Two – Panel Review

A Stage One appeal must be submitted before a Stage Two appeal.

For more information, contact the Exams Office at exams@reigate.ac.uk.

Please remember that once an appeal has been submitted, the grade may go up, stay the same or go down. If the grade goes down, students are not able to keep the higher grade.

A Level re-sits

Students who fail an A Level ‘paper’, are not able to just re-sit that paper. All candidates will need to re-sit the whole A Level.

Unfortunately there is no capacity for students to re-sit A Levels using Reigate College as an exam centre. Students wishing to re-sit A Levels will need to research alternative options and costs at different centres.

GCSE re-sits

Students who do not achieve at least a Grade 4 in either GCSE English or Maths must re-sit them.

BTEC re-sits

Students who have done BTEC qualifications are able to re-sit specific modules, however, the College is unable to offer this facility to students who have left the College. These candidates will need to research options at alternative centres.

A fee is payable to re-sit any modules

For more information about sitting exams at different centres please see the JCQ information for private candidates.

Can you ask for coursework and non-examined assessments to be remarked?

No, unfortunately coursework and non-examined assessments cannot be remarked.

Certificate collection

Each year Upper Sixth leavers or their representatives are invited in to College (in December, January and February) to collect certificates.

Certificates will be available for collection 10am-1pm on the following days:
Saturday 7th December 2024
Saturday 25th January 2025
Saturday 8th February 2025

Photo ID, such as a passport or driving licence is required when collecting certificates.

If you are unable to attend and would like to nominate a named representative to collect your certificates, please email exams@reigate.ac.uk with the subject title “certificate collection” to give your written permission. Please clearly state your name, student ID number and the name of your representative.

Keep certificates safe

It is imperative that all certificates are kept safe as proof of confirmed final grades that both future educational establishments and employers may request to see. The College does not hold copies of any certificates. Students who lose them at a later date will need to contact the exams boards directly to arrange and pay a significant amount for replacements.
