As one of the College’s sustainability initiatives, an area of grass has been turned over to be its very first wildflower patch. Kim Saw, the College’s Director of Finance and a founding member of the Sustainability Committee, explained: “We’ve rotovated the grass and for the first year we are planting Yellow Rattle. This is a semi-parasitic plant which feeds on the remaining grass and reduces the fertility of the soil. The seeds we planted today should produce seedlings from February to March and yellow flowers from May onwards. In Autumn 2026 we will plant mixed wildflower seeds and hope to have a beautiful display in Spring / Summer 2027.”
The wildflower patch was cultivated by members of the Nature Club, which meets on Friday lunchtimes and is run by Toby Anderson, the College’s Aspire & EPQ Co-ordinator. Toby said: “This year we have successfully renovated the Courtyard Garden next to the English department and are working on renewing and revamping the Courtyard outside the Chemistry department. We will also be running the College’s third annual Nature Photo contest later in the year.”
