Maths competitions add up to success

Record-breaking numbers took part in this year’s UK Maths Trust’s (UKMT) Senior Maths Challenge at the College, while talented Upper Sixth female students excelled in the UKMT’s new competition for girls.

160 A level Maths students from across the Lower and Upper Sixth signed up for the 90-minute, non-calculator test which aims to stimulate mathematical problem solving through tricky, abstract questions.

Maths teacher Jacob Moon said, “This year we’ve seen a large increase in the number of students achieving a Gold, Silver or Bronze Award, with those securing a Gold eligible to enter the follow-on rounds.

“And to add to this success, twelve Upper Sixth students competed in the new Mathematical Competition for Girls, coming away with four Distinctions and six Merits – truly excellent results.  This new competition is harder than the Senior Maths Challenge, so we were delighted they showed such willingness and demonstrated their passion and enjoyment for maths by taking part in these extracurricular competitions.”

Congratulations must also go to Upper Sixth student Eva F. who competed in the Maths Olympiad for Girls – a tough, three-hour long challenge that really tests students’ ability to problem solve. Eva did fantastically well and did the College proud with her efforts.

Well done to everyone who took part, including all our Gold Award winners and those who took part to our first Mathematical Competition for Girls: Ava M., Avery S., Eva R., Grace I., Izzy J., Louise G., Lulietta B., Martha C., Matilda M., Muniza H., Nila N. and Victoria P.
