Reigate College was a really positive chapter in my life; it was where I started to figure out what I was interested in and the kind of person I wanted to be. It helped me build my confidence, develop new ways of thinking, and explore subjects that shaped my further studies and the career path I’ve taken since.

One highlight for me was Sociology with Katya. She was an incredibly encouraging teacher who always sparked thoughtful discussions and made the subject feel relevant to real life. I particularly remember learning about global development and starting to see how social, economic, and environmental issues are all connected. Looking back, that’s probably where my interest in sustainability first began, even though I didn’t realise it at the time. It’s interesting to see how those early lessons have come full circle and influenced where I’ve ended up today, working in the energy sector.

When I left College, I wanted to become a detective, so went on to study Criminology with Psychology at university. However, towards the end of my degree, I realised the course and that career choice was not quite the right fit for me. What I enjoyed most was the psychology side, especially understanding people: how they think, feel, and make decisions.

So I started thinking about how I could work in a role that still involved people but was more structured and organised. That is when I discovered project management. I chatted to my dad for some advice and realised immediately that it resonated with my skills and personality. To pivot into this field, I completed a master’s in project management, which helped me build the foundation for my current role.

I am currently working as a Graduate Project Manager at Amentum in the Energy Department. My role involves supporting the delivery of large-scale energy and infrastructure projects, helping to ensure they run smoothly, on time and within budget. I really enjoy the flexibility of the role and the fact that I get to use my organisational and interpersonal skills to help deliver projects that make a tangible difference.

One of the biggest challenges has been entering a sector that’s completely new to me – I don’t have a background in energy or engineering – but the company has been incredibly supportive and gives me the space and training to learn as I go. It has been a fantastic opportunity to take on real responsibility, learn from experienced colleagues, and play a small part in shaping the future of clean energy.

Looking ahead, on completion of my graduate scheme, I’d like to explore the different areas of the business, and work towards achieving project management chartership as I continue to grow in the industry.

I wish I had known that it’s completely okay not to know exactly what you want to do when you’re at College. Hardly anyone truly has it all figured out at that age, even if it sometimes seems like they do. Stay open-minded and not be afraid to change direction if something doesn’t feel right. And don’t feel rushed into making big decisions: taking the time to reflect on what you enjoy and what motivates you can make a huge difference in finding a path that feels right for you.

For anyone thinking about a career in project management, remember it’s really about people, not just technical skills. Strong communication, empathy, and teamwork will help you stand out, and the technical side can be learned along the way. Stay curious and open to learning, it will take you far.
