College gave me the chance to really commit to the subjects I was passionate about. I ended up studying Philosophy at university because of how thoroughly I was able to explore the topic at A Level. To this day, Philosophy is one of my largest interests and I’m thankful that I was given the opportunity to study it at College.
Since leaving College I’ve achieved a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Philosophy, specialising in the area of ethics. I’ve developed a particular interest in medical ethics and have been seeking roles and opportunities that would allow me to pursue this interest as a career.
My first role after graduating was as a Research Integrity Officer at the University of Birmingham’s College of Medicine and Health. I found this to be personally fulfilling as well great for professional development. I’m now the Prospect Development Officer for the University of Birmingham and I’m really looking forward to progressing in this role!
A big concern I’ve had throughout my academic and professional journey is how to enter roles that are STEM aligned when my background is in humanities. Although it’s been difficult, there are always opportunities for people like me that can be achieved.
For any students about to start at College, I’d say don’t feel pressured to pursue a subject or career path that you aren’t interested in. Career opportunities in philosophy aren’t the most common, but they are there for those who have passion for the subject!
In the future, I’d like to pursue a PhD in the ethical use of AI in healthcare, to further specialise my knowledge and progress my career.
