My time at Reigate helped me discover my passion for geography, which I then went on to study at university. My teachers were supportive and passionate, which made me look forward to all my geography lessons.
Currently, I’m working for AGR Renewables in London designing renewable energy systems – including solar, battery, and wind – using AutoCAD.
My job is to oversee projects from their initial development through to construction and then post-construction phase, primarily through the creation of technical drawings and plans.
I also use geographic information systems (GIS) with QGIS software to find the best locations for renewable energy projects. This involves analysing factors like land use, environmental constraints, and resource availability. My analysis produces visual outputs, including graphs and maps, that improve our understanding of a project’s feasibility and impact.
While I did study GIS within my degree, I had no experience with CAD before I started my job, so I’m particularly proud of how I’ve learnt to adapt and problem solve. After some basic training, I was able to go away and teach myself how to use AutoCAD to the level needed for my day-to-day work. At first this was incredibly daunting, but now, after time and practice, it’s second nature to me.
For students keen to get into sustainability, I’d say don’t lose sight of your long-term vision. The journey to get to where you want to be may seem daunting and stressful at times, but with hard work and focus – it will pay off in the end!
