My time at college was very enjoyable. Creative Media Production was my favourite subject, as I could showcase my creativity and innovation through a music video, radio advert and short film.
When I first joined, I wasn’t the most sociable or confident individual and found the transition between school and College quite difficult. However, the fast-paced environment, increased independence and facilities allowed me to step outside my comfort zone and become the best version of myself. For example, I successfully applied to be a Student Mentor, ran lunchtime clubs and helped out at open evening events.
Throughout my first year, I was debating between university and apprenticeships as a route to a potential career in journalism. I liked the idea of going to university but settled on an apprenticeship as I felt I was better suited to gaining hands-on experience. While I didn’t get my first choice of apprenticeship, I was successful with a Level 4 Creative Enterprise course at Global Academy. This meant I could study in a media specialist academy and expand my career options into social media, content creation, radio, film & TV.
Since leaving College, I’ve continually focused on developing my strengths, skills and experience, having worked as a Production Runner at the BFI Audio Production Awards and as a Content Creator for Happaning and Rampage at Notting Hill Carnival. I’ve also spoken at events to promote the Creative Enterprise course and become a confident Volunteer Radio Presenter for Radio Marsden and St Helier, co-hosting my own show. I also continue to volunteer weekly with The Diamond Centre for Disabled Riders.
Currently, I’m studying on the Business by Design course, which is run by the Kurt Geiger Foundation. Kurt Geiger is a luxury British footwear and accessories brand and this course aims to help young people from under-represented communities get into the creative industries.
Over seven months, I’ve learnt about Design, Buying, Merchandising, Wholesale, Logistics, Retail, Finance, HR, E-Commerce, Marketing and PR, so I’ve gained a really rounded knowledge of a business. Being part of this is helping me to expand my media portfolio and network within the industry, and I’m looking forward to two weeks of paid work experience within Kurt Geiger company.
As the course nears its end, my focus is back on applying for jobs and so I maintain a strong presence on LinkedIn as I search for work. It’s fair to say that even with great experience and tailored applications, it’s a tough market. I’ve applied to many entry-level jobs and internships. Ghosting is common and it can be hard when you don’t get constructive feedback after an application.
My advice to students who want a career in the media industry is to build your experience early through short courses, portfolios, volunteering and extracurricular activities. In a difficult jobs market, it can help you stand out and could make the difference to being offered a role. Never give up and keeping working for your dreams!
